First and foremost that link will bring you to the only place I know of that an American/Westerner can read Deadman Wonderland. It rocks worlds. But because I know most people haven't read it I figured I'd outline some things about Yoh.

Relationships: No one is here from Yoh's universe although it really wouldn't make much of a difference even if they were. Yoh is charming and kind long enough to sink his claws in and, by that point, it's too late for anyone to get out of his clutches. Yoh is manipulative, selfish, and a thief. He uses people but they will never know they are being used.

Minatsuki: I misidentified him before. He isn't "selfish" per say. Everything Yoh does in life he does for his sister. Minatsuki is a few years his junior and completely insane. Ever since their mother died Yoh has dedicated himself to protecting his little sister. When Minatsuki was sent to prison he followed her, getting himself arrested. He is determined to keep her safe even if she hurts him (which she does, sometimes very frequently.) Minatsuki's loves are blood and flowers.

Gardens: Both Yoh's mother and sister kept/keep gardens. For this reason plants are very reassuring to him and, now that he's been there, Yoh will spend a lot of time in the garden.

Thief: Yoh has sticky fingers. He's an excellent pickpocket. If he wants something he'll usually get it. It's more head-canon but I think Yoh can't always help stealing. Although he doesn't object to it so much anymore and, indeed, consciously steals on many occasions, I think he is a kleptomaniac. He will steal anything, sell anything, get anything.

Knight in Tarnished Armor: Yoh has a good heart. Had his life been different he may even have gotten to play the hero. But that's not the hand fate has given him. Yoh lives in a twisted twisted world of lies, violence, blood, abuse, and death and he will make damned sure that he survive it. Yoh has rolled with life's punches and each time he has twisted himself to adapt. He has very few real friends but those he has he is extremely loyal to. He is self-serving but he is also, on occasion, self-sacrificing, putting himself in danger to protect his little sister.

But...: Don't get me wrong. Yoh is an asshole. He will do what it takes to get what he wants no matter who he has to hurt or step on. He will lie, cheat, steal, flatter, manipulate. He will play the fool, the friend, he may even act like a lackey but in reality Yoh is always in control.

Arrogance: Yoh's a liiiittle too sure of himself. He's got a good intuition most of the time and he's very good at what he does but he becomes very cock-sure when he knows things are going his way.

Fighting: Usually armed with a box-cutter Yoh is by no means defenseless even now without a weapon. He is an excellent melee fighter and brawler. He usually uses a weapon of some kind but never anything traditional, usually found weapons. He has never fired a gun or used a real knife in his life. Under no circumstances will he fight fairly.

Liar: Yoh says that on the day his mother died his life changed. That was the day he stopped telling the truth. There are times I wonder exactly how much he knows about his mum's demise. You can never trust anything Yoh says, he identifies himself as a liar before anything else. But it doesn't matter what he says as people will always believe him.

Don't fuck with him.

But he might fuck with you.

Yoh is fairly good at reading people so if he avoids you it's probably because he's guessed that you won't fall for it. Although I said fairly good. I have a feel some people (like L....) will catch him off guard. It's very difficult to see through his facade however and I don't really want everyone to immediately distrust him because nothing seems untrustworthy about him.

Where do I start?  Let’s see, I guess everything begins ten years ago.  I was nine and my family lived in Tokyo.  That’s right, the Tokyo earthquake that sunk most of the city.  That was the day my mom died.  Crushed under our house, bones shattered, muscles squished, everything but her face turned to mush.  My sister was the only other one home.  She saw the whole thing.  When we got home she was crouched over our mother’s body crying and begging her to get up.  But she was gone. 

My dad and I were out when it happened. When the quake started it felt like the world was going to come apart.  Just shatter and drop us all into the sea.  That was when I thought I was going to die.  I’ve never been so scared, not before and not since. 

            Well, not until prison.  But, that’s Deadman Wonderland.  Only the strong survive.  It’s a Hell where even accidents are treated as acts of defiance and will get you killed by the wardens and guards.  The murderers and gang leaders rule the facility. Any prisoner who tries to stand up to them, well, let’s just say I’ve ended up in the hospital ward more than once, okay?  In DW if you don’t follow the crowd they’ll crush you without a second thought.  Without even slowing down.  Honestly, I can’t think of anywhere more nightmarish….

            You don’t know about Deadman Wonderland, do you?  Alright, I’ll fill you in.  You see after the earthquake, the one that killed my mom and destroyed Tokyo, the city decided it had to make money somehow.  But no one wants to build on a city that’s already sunk once, no one but lunatics.  And I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the people who built and run DW are the worst kind of sickos.  It’s a prison.  Well, it’s not just a prison.  It’s a theme park.  People from all over Japan, Hell, thrill-seekers and sociopaths from all over the globe flock to Deadman Wonderland: ride the fastest roller coaster in Asia, have lunch at one of the twelve park restaurants, take in the lunatic parade and watch prisoners fight to the death for a piece of candy.   Fun times.  It’s Hell and now it’s home. 

 And that was where my sister ended up.  Minatski never did anything wrong.  She couldn’t ever do anything wrong.  The poor thing doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.  She’s just unlucky.  Ever since mom died nothing good seems to happen to us.  Now dad’s dead too and all we have is each other.  Well, we did, now Minatski’s in prison for something that wasn’t her fault.  She thinks, they think - everyone thinks - that she killed our father.  And now she’s in Deadman Wonderland.  That’s why I stole that watch; I wanted to find her so I could save her.  I’d never taken anything before so it’s no wonder I got caught right away. I pled guilty, made a fuss, and made sure that I ended up here, near my sister. 

It’s hard in prison.  You have to become something else, something you’re not, something foul and evil just to stay alive….

            Okay, no, stop.  That’s too much.  I’m beginning to feel sick.  I can’t keep the nice guy act up for that long.  Let’s start again, shall we?  For real this time. 

            My name is Yoh Takami and I am a liar.  You cannot trust anything I’m about to say or have already said because it’s very likely that absolutely nothing I write will be true.  The only thing you can trust about me is that you can’t trust me.  The nice guy, the friend, the oh-so-innocent fool everyone sees is as phony as…well come to think of it; I don’t think there is much faker than me. 

            It is true that my parents are dead.  Not due to a series of unfortunate events; they were murdered.  Not by accident but maliciously by my sister.  She had me tricked for a while too.  I was never sure about her…but that was a long time ago.   Looking back on it I can’t believe I was so unsure for so long.  Minatsuki is...

           I love my little sister.  I'm not lying about that.  I never would.  Minatsuki means the world to me.  She's not crazy.  I hate it when people say that.  She's not even bad she's just....

         Life hasn't been too nice to us, particularly not to Minatsuki.  She's just going with what life has given her.  A bad hand.  And I'll be there for her no matter what.  I'll try to make her forget how shitty life is.   She deserves better than this Hell hole.  And I will get her out.  I will save her, by hook or by crook.  

I am a liar.  I am a villain.  She is a victim.  I'm crazier than she is.  No.  Maybe I'm not crazy.  Not yet.  I've just got a couple of nasty habits.

A nasty habit. 

My fingers are particularly sticky.  Everyone who talks to me walks away with slightly lighter pockets.  They won’t notice until much later that their watch is missing, or their ring, or their wallet, or they might never notice.  Maybe I took something so small they’d forgotten about it.  But, regardless, it’s mine.  I’ve always been this way; it’s like my hands have a mind of their own.  But I encourage them.  That way when someone loses something important I can help them find it.  I’m a very good friend.  I’ll keep your secrets, listen to you, and help you through anything. 

            I just ask for a few things in return. 

I don’t have friends, not really, not in so many words, I have pawns.  I have tools.  I have fall-guys, ATMs, bodyguards, anything a guy like me could ever need.  And the best part is they don’t even realize it.  What I’m trying to say is, don’t fuck with me.  Although, I might fuck with you. 

            Best part of all this, I have to say, is that no matter who sees this, who reads it, no one will believe it.   Because it’s not true.  No, it couldn’t be.  Not Yoh Takami!  He’s such a good guy!  A little unlucky sometimes, but so helpful and polite!   He’s a good friend, always there for people who need him!  So friendly!  So nice!  How could anyone say those things about Yoh-kun?!  Of course it isn’t true.  Why would I say something like that?  It all has to be a lie, doesn’t it?
